For my friend Farhad Manjoo's series on robots taking over human jobs, he tasked me with writing a program that could blog in the style of Jason Kottke. This involved gathering thousands of "candidate links" that Jason might link to--he's the type of blogger who primarily links to others' content--and weighing various variables to decide if they seemed like something he'd be interested in.
The results were a middling success, as Farhad wrote, though Kottke did link to one item our program produced. Since I've started studying machine learning, I think we could have done a much better job with a little more advanced math.
