Ran in: The Big Money, March 9, 2009 Built with: Actionscript, MXML Description: My colleague Chad Matlin at The Big Money was interested in whether poor reviews coorelated with a movie's box office performance, particulary after the first weekend, pegged to the opening weekend of Watchmen. To find out, I calculated the percentage of revenue collected in the first weekend for a few hundred recent movies and mapped them on this scatter plot, colored by genre. (You can also view other data points, like gross revenue, on the dropdown menu.) By allowing readers to toggle genres on the chart, we could demonstrate how the correlation was most apparent in action movies. Embedded from Slate with permission. |

Ran in: The Big Money, February 19, 2009 Built with: Actionscript, MXML, JSON Description: In another movie revenue project I did with Chad Matlin at The Big Money, we looked at whether an Oscar nomination breaths new life in a movie in the box office. To find out, I built a tool that would allow us to easily visualize revenue data from hundreds of movies. By publishing the tool alongside the article, readers can easily explore the same data we used to write the story. Embedded from Slate with permission. |
